Delivers the Standard Pathway exams (MCQ and Clinical) for international medical graduates, and runs the Primary Source Verification gate for all three medical migration pathways.
The Australian Medical Council (AMC) is the delivery body for international medical graduate (IMG) examinations under the authority of the Medical Board of Australia (MedBA), the LIN-designated assessor for medical migration. AMC delivers the Standard Pathway exams (CAT MCQ and Clinical Examination, or a Workplace-Based Assessment) and handles Primary Source Verification of medical credentials through ECFMG MyIntealth for all three pathways (Standard, Competent Authority, Specialist). AMC does not process registration applications or issue the migration points-test outcome itself. MedBA, via AHPRA, is the registration and migration assessment authority.
AMC delivers the Standard Pathway exams and runs Primary Source Verification, but it is not the designated authority for the visa points test. That role belongs to the Medical Board of Australia (MedBA) via AHPRA. AMC's outputs (the AMC certificate, PSV report) are inputs to the MedBA registration decision, which then feeds the migration outcome. AMC's own website says "The AMC has no role in processing applications for registration or in granting registration." Many applicants assume AMC issues the migration outcome directly. It does not.
For IMGs not from Competent Authority countries, the Standard Pathway requires Primary Source Verification ($642), the CAT MCQ Examination ($2,920), and the Clinical Examination ($3,000 in-person or $3,400 online) for a total of $6,562 in AMC fees. Add MedBA registration fees of around $2,321 to reach end-to-end costs near $8,883. The Workplace-Based Assessment route swaps the Clinical Exam for a $1,070 AMC fee, but hospital WBA program fees are substantial and not published by AMC.
If your medical training is from a Competent Authority country (UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, or New Zealand), AMC's only role in the pathway is Primary Source Verification, the $642 portfolio fee. No MCQ. No Clinical Exam. The rest of the pathway runs through MedBA via AHPRA, with provisional registration and conversion fees instead of AMC exam fees. Total AMC plus MedBA cost is around $2,963 (PSV $642 + provisional registration $742 + general conversion $521 + annual general $1,058), roughly 45 percent of the Standard Pathway minimum.
AMC does not publish an end-to-end Standard Pathway timeline. Individual steps have stated turnarounds: MCQ examination authorisation is valid for 12 months to book at Pearson VUE, and the AMC certificate is issued within 5 business days after the final exam pass. Total elapsed time depends on exam scheduling, number of attempts, and result wait. Industry commentary puts the Standard Pathway at 18 to 24 months end-to-end. The Competent Authority Pathway runs in months, not years.
AMC requires English language evidence on every pathway: IELTS Academic 7.0 in each of the four components, or OET B in each of the four components, with prescribed PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT equivalents. The threshold is high enough that some applicants need multiple test attempts. Test results must be current at the time of application. AMC's English requirement is separate from any Home Affairs requirement at the visa stage.
